Lyon, France – June 4, 2015 – Merial, the animal health division of Sanofi, held a ceremony today to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its Lyon Porte-des-Alpes (LPA) manufacturing site, in the presence of the Lyon Senator-Mayor Gerard Collomb, the Mayor of Saint-Priest, Gilles Gascon and other local dignitaries of the Rhône Alpes region.

Over the past 20 years, Merial has invested over 300 million euros in its LPA operations and the company confirms a further 40 million euros for the latest generation of bioreactors, as part of the company’s plans to increase global manufacturing capacity. “This is part of our international growth strategy and our plans to further develop new R&D product lines in LPA, our global state of the art biologics manufacturing facility”, explained Carsten Hellmann, Merial CEO and Sanofi Executive Vice President.

Merial’s largest biologics production facility is located in Saint-Priest, a suburb of Lyon, France. The site employs 450 people and manufactures 80 different antigens used to produce 250 vaccines; 80% of those vaccines are exported to 140 countries globally. Every year, the site manufactures over 25 billion doses of vaccines for a large range of animal species, including for dogs, cats, chickens, pigs, horses and cows.

During his visit, Gerard Collomb said: “Lyon has become a center of excellence for healthcare industries, based on the historical synergies between human and animal health. About 75% of human emerging infectious diseases are of animal origin, showing the importance of animal health in the public health debate. I am honored to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Merial site in the Porte-des-Alpes Technology Park, one of the pillars of our local industry”.

The LPA manufacturing facility, inaugurated in 1995, played a key role in the wider economic development of the region. As the first company to set up operations in the then new Technology Park at St. Priest, Merial was the pioneer of an industrial area which now welcomes over 7,000 employees working for 200 different companies each day. The facility is built on a 52 acres lot, allowing for ample space to continue its growth and ensure the strategic position of the Lyon site.

As a division of Sanofi, the largest private employer in the Rhone-Alpes region, Merial employs 1,500 people in the Lyon area and will officially open its new global headquarters building in the centre of the Lyon Gerland Biodistrict in 2017.
